By covering tuition fees and living expenses for three years, the programme aims to foster high-calibre research collaborations between the UK and China.

Key features of this studentship

  • Fully-funded scholarship (The University covers tuition fees, and the China Scholarship Council covers living expenses and travel expenses).
  • Open across all research disciplines in Humanities.
  • Prestigious joint-scholarship aimed at enhancing international research collaboration.

How to be considered

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Equality, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to the success of The University of Manchester, and are at the heart of all of our activities. We know that diversity strengthens our research community, leading to enhanced research creativity, productivity and quality, and societal and economic impact.

We actively encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation and transgender status.

To be considered suitable for the joint scholarship, you must be a citizen and permanent resident of the People's Republic of China at the time of application. Chinese students currently based overseas may be eligible subject to CSC policy at the point of application.

You must also:

  • return to China upon completion of your studies/research;
  • meet the minimum academic requirements for your preferred PhD programme;
  • hold an unconditional offer letter from The University of Manchester by 14 February to commence in September 2025, including meeting the English language requirements;
  • Demonstrate a history of research engagement, which may include contributions to publications/articles, promoting your research to a wider audience, prizes for research or project work;
  • satisfy CSC's selection criteria.

1. Choose your PhD programme from across the research areas.

2. Prepare a research proposal

Guidance on preparing a research proposal can be found by school:
